Church At Wonder

The happy small church, just down the block,

With the bell up in the tower,

Which swings and rings, on gracious Sundays,

Calling to the folks that will come.

Their singing voices, their Sunday school class, where dresses and suits are pressed,

The old man in the front, in bib-overalls, who can play tambourine with regular time,

And the choir of women with curls of hair on their heads,

Holding the books of words and music.

Each service is different, each service the same, with the counts up on the wall, how many, how much, they ring in the day and the folks who came.

The Grandmas are there,

Their hands raised in the air,

with tears, tears for the ones alone,

And smiles covered gently, by grandchildren asleep, or playing on the bench.

The sermon is preached, the crowd murmurs or shouts Amen! The pianist plays, each turns to the other, “God Bless you”, “Great to see you”, “Amen.”
