Frozen Palms

This pond, like so many others are spots on the landscape, hundreds and hundreds full around the maps of this country, places here or there, or down there, or over there, each finding a resting place, and satisfying the thirst of man or beast, on that little ground.

But each pernicious body of water, mixed with all the elements of dams, and wind, and the length of open land, lying to the front or back or side of its level for earth to see, can bring its surface to move, even just a little, while temperature and time do their work, and muddle up the dormancy, making ice soldiers to stand, for even moments, upon its surface.

These tiny towers show the beauty, that this combination will never be matched completely again, nor this incomparable feeling of saying that; it is all alive.

Palms. Living in sand, created in ice, pondering for life.
