Highway 9

Four miles east of Mtn View, four miles west of Carnegie, looking north off Highway 9, the view is blocked by the metal frame of this particular windmill, it’s blades facing the cold air blowing across, it’s feet anchored to the ground, and it’s view, across miles of open land.

The tree that kept a few cows cool, in days of summers past. has fallen, it’s branches bleached, it’s trunk turned white, all by the heat and cold and the bright sunshine of the Oklahoma weather.

The feed bin has also bent, and shrunk, and turned this way and that, it’s boards peeled from trees a hundred twenty years past, each seemingly caulked with times remorse, and on the right, the breath of a tree, planted in silver tin, already given up the ghost in its short and stunted growth.
