Keeping Watch

The morning has risen. The day is becoming a full day, and those that have flooded this melt of morning are not alone, quietly walking, looking, pacing the green grass, their senses peaking out searching for those who have fed them, cared for them, and seen them grow and be grown.

Looking and watching for the bodies and the buckets, for the quick smiles and the calls without language but catches and clicks that would bring them to the front of the pen, or out of the cold field while their breath steamed in from of them.

But now they could only want them to be there. She stood on the porch and called out. The house existed with no paint, as most has peeled away, the boards were beyond showing age, the drive grown up, the storage places gone, except but the red tin roof and the bricks of the fireplace standing firm, holding itself together, keeping watch itself for the ones who might come again.
