Seven Calves

You would have thought that this cow had multiple births, but no, she had but one, one that she lost, that cold night before the spring, and she had bawled that mournful tone. Nine months and ten days had passed, and the birth of her calf had failed.

In the next three days, through walking about, making herself known to the calves, giving her milk to one or more, she became the baby sitter to the calves. She is keeping the tiny herd of calves together, while there mothers move out in the pasture, showing the small ones the water tank, how to drink, and how to keep their hearts.
