She Stands

Above four legs of buckskin brown, her color all mixed with shade and shadows, this gray-faced mare who watches the curl and bending down of the grasses.


She will see through your eyes like a backward look, the pain and presence within, and will gauge and calculate your feelings, before you ever speak, or move, or try to win.


A whinney, a blow of air through her cheeks, that step that's almost a step, that guarded ripple of muscles twisting in her legs, that breath of steam like air, circling out both sides of her nose, will permeate your thoughts, and clear your rusted head, as she lingers for a fraction, to feel your soul within. You've crossed the path and through the line, she knows, she knows.
