Small Pieces Of Cloth

Grandma had cut one-inch squares of the cloth;

From scraps, pieces of leftover or thrown away clothes and flour sacks decorated for making that new dress, it’s colors of blue, and red and pink, stripes and flowers.

For a shirt or blouse, (never pants), and piled them up, to make the quilt that would hold you soft and warm.

These two-hole buttons, that held her dresses on,

The tiny ones that kept her sleeves and bodice pretty,

And red ribbon, like finding gold in the treasure chest of cloth, that made each day a special one.

Some small pieces, of a life well lived, quietly held, affected so many, and carried more than ever, in her nightly prayers.
