The killdeer patrols his home, from wetness where there may be some life giving food, to the dry and dusty road beds, or in the weeds and purple flowers that crawl up from the ditches and sides of the roads.
They will watch the air, the land above their head, the ground and all in between.
The three ounce bird will run away from the nest, persuading any looker to follow the running bird, and making the ground nest safe.
