When They Were

Together for a weekend. Families from the Texas panhandle, southwest and northeast Oklahoma, all brought by the family name, for fun and an absolutely great time. Bernice Oklahoma on Grand Lake O' the Cherokee's, the place at the small, non-denominational church.

Smiles, laughter, games, stories told of old days and good days, grinning at each other, their lives and loves are best they can be. Kids being kids, love's strongest bond, the goodness that made it work.

Close to forty years later, one generation of great grandparents is completely gone, only one survives the next, and those of us who were full of youth and vigor before, are past retirement age, and two more generations are now spread out with children, time and lives, that mean more than we can comprehend.

The church survives. The memories do as well, as best as they can be relayed, and the newness will soon replace all of us.
