Winganon

The hands of men, working in earnest, put together this gym with these native stones in the late thirties, the Works Project Administration, close to ninety years ago, stacked in the end design to fit these walls so high and long, in hand mixed cement and hand laid stone.

The school is next door, just a little ways down the hill, and is covered up by a mobile home, junk, vehicles that don’t look parked, but stacked around, and rocks and tar paper and plastic, kids broken toys and burned out cans of trash and garbage.

The trees inside the gym are taller than those outside. The outside trees protect the vision of the place, from those who drive by in spring and fall, and keep the walkabouts to the few who can see through the dense foliage.

The lake, called Oologah, came almost twenty years later, and washes up a few hundred feet away from this high spot on the hill, that today looks almost flat and level.
